Price of Colonoscopy Test

What is Colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is a type of diagnostic test that is used to examine a patient’s colon or rectum.

It uses a long, narrow, flexible tube which has a camera attached to its front.

This tube is inserted into the rectum to check for changes in the intestine such as polyps, cancer, irritated tissues etc.

The camera assists the doctors to visualize the inner lining of the intestine and diagnose the correct diseases.

The poly or irritated tissue can be removed via a scope during a colonoscopy test.

The colonoscopy procedure also assists in getting a tissue sample during the test.

How is colonoscopy used?

Colonoscopy is a widely used diagnostic test that is used by doctors to –

1. Check the cause of signs and symptoms in the intestine:

Colonoscopy helps the doctor to check the cause of intestine problems including abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, diarrhoea, change in bowel movement, etc.

2. Screening for cancer:

Colonoscopy is one of a few options available to detect colon cancer.

It is also one of the most recommended methods that are used to screen for colon cancer.

3. Detects polyps in the intestine:

Colonoscopy is commonly used to look for polyps in the wall of the intestine.

4. Along with treatment:

Colonoscopy is often used while removing an object or placing a stent into the colon to visualize the interior of the intestine.

These are some of the most common advantages of colonoscopy tests.

Apart from that colonoscopy can be used for multiple reasons as required by the doctor or surgeon.

The use of colonoscopy depends upon the need for the diseases that are to be detected or treated.

Types of Colonoscopies

According to the need for colonoscopy, it has been divided into two main types depending on the requirements of the patient:

  • Screening Colonoscopy

Screening Colonoscopy is done to check for the presence of colon cancer when the patient has no symptoms.

The main objective of screening colonoscopy is prevention. It is done only for the patient above the age of 50 years.

  • Diagnostic Colonoscopy

Diagnostic colonoscopy on the other hand is done to diagnose a particular disease a patient may have.

It is done based on symptoms and abnormal growth of tissue observed during a screening colonoscopy. It is used to collect tissue samples from the intestine.

After taking a sample, a screening colonoscopy gets converted into a diagnostic colonoscopy.

Both techniques are similar in terms of the use of equipment and area of examination. The type of method which might be required is decided by the doctor.

Procedure of Colonoscopy

The procedure of colonoscopy is not complex or requires any complex equipment.

The procedure of colonoscopy is divided into three parts as follows:

  • Before the colonoscopy procedure

The colonoscopy should be done on an empty stomach, that’s why the doctors advise the patient to not eat anything before the test.

The patients are required to follow a specific diet which restricts the person to eat any solid food after midnight the night before the colonoscopy test.

The patient can intake only fluids such as water, milk, tea or coffee etc. Avoid red-coloured beverages which can be mistaken for blood by doctors during colonoscopy.

Apart from that doctors sometimes prescribe laxatives and other medications for diabetic or hypertensive patients if necessary.

  • During the colonoscopy procedure

Before the procedure of colonoscopy, the patient is given sedatives and pain medications to ease the process.

During the procedure of colonoscopy, the doctor inserts a long tube with a camera and light at its tip into the rectum of the patient.

The camera allows the doctor to easily visualize the intestine from the inside and make a better diagnosis. The doctor may insert other instruments into the channel to collect a tissue sample for biopsy.

  • After the colonoscopy procedure

The colonoscopy test may take around 30-60 minutes, after that the patient can go home.

The sedative may wear off in around an hour, so it is advised to not drive by yourself. The patient may notice blood in their first bowel movement after the procedure.

If the bleeding persists or abdominal pain or symptoms seem to occur, immediately consult your doctor.

Follow the instructions of your doctor throughout the process.

Recovery Period

After the procedure of colonoscopy, the patient can be discharged immediately but it may take around 1-2 days to completely recover.

Ask the doctor if you need to take any precautions after the colposcopy procedure.

Risk of colonoscopy

There are some minor risks associated with colonoscopy, which are not life threatening at all. These complications involve:

  • Side effects of sedatives given during the colonoscopy procedure. This occurs in rare cases only.

  • Perforation or tear in the wall of the intestine.

  • While taking tissue samples from the intestine, it may be possible that this could lead to minor bleeding.

All these complications are not severe. It is common to observe bleeding in the first excretion after the procedure, but if the bleeding persists with other intestinal problems; consult your doctor.
